Everyones been talking about the Amazon Kindle Tablet. Now lets take a look at what the Bezos gang hopes to be the iPad Slayer. Although they are intentionally not competing head to head with Apple, rather they plan to exploit the popularity of the Kindle with a small inexpensive model, which at $250.00 Suggested Retail, that is half the cost of the iPad.
MG Siegler from TechCrunch managed to get a prototype demo, and let the cat out of the bag. Now everyone has picked up on it, and this promises to be one of the most anticipated product launches in recent memory.
So here’s the low-down:
- 7-inch full-color screen, no eInk (10-inch coming in 2012)
- Two-finger multitouch support
- Runs a version of Android that’s older than 2.2 but it’s been heavily customized
- There is “No Camera”
- UI looks and feels like Amazon’s iOS Kindle app
- 6GB of storage
- The killer Price – $250
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes at ZD reported “A few things stand out here. First is the price. $250 is a little bit higher than some people were expecting ($199 was touted as the sweet spot). $250 will wipe the floor with tablets from other makers. Seriously. Amazon has huge market reach and this will have a huge effect on other tablets … even possibly the iPad.”
It may be interesting to note, that Amazon is going with a pre-2.2 version of Android, which means it will not be using ‘Honeycomb‘ or ‘Ice Cream Sandwich‘ which could be a major blow to both Google and OEMs who have been putting a lot of effort (and faith) in these releases.
And as Siegler pointed out, “But the key for Amazon is just how deeply integrated all of their services are. Amazon’s content store is always just one click away. The book reader is a Kindle app (which looks similar to how it does on Android and iOS now). The music player is Amazon’s Cloud Player. The movie player is Amazon’s Instant Video player. The app store is Amazon’s Android Appstore.”
And with only 6 GB of storage, this should encourage users to also use Amazon’s Cloud Service. The “iPad Slayer”, “Game Changer”, well this remains to be seen, but they certainly have a strong product offering here!
